PDF to text, on your own computer.

Last updated: October 2, 2026 · Free online tool and Chrome extension by Gallera Studio

Image to Text OCR reads PDF files inside Chrome. Drop a PDF into the popup and the text layer is extracted page by page, tables intact, ready to copy. The file never leaves your computer. To extract text from a PDF without the extension, drop the file on this page.

Drop a PDF here.

Drop a PDF or an image anywhere on this page, or pick a file. Pages with a text layer are read directly.

Nothing is uploaded: the engine loads into this page and reads the file on your device.

Steps

  1. Open the popup

Click the extension icon, or press Alt+Shift+O (⌥⇧O on Mac).

  2. Drop the PDF

Drag the file onto the popup or click Choose file. Pages are read in order.

  3. Pick text or table

The Text tab shows the pages as text with paragraph breaks. The Table tab shows rows and columns when the pages contain a table.

  4. Copy

Click Copy text or Copy as table and paste into your document or spreadsheet.

Questions

Is the PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF reader (pdf.js) is packaged inside the extension and runs on your computer. No network request is made for a file.

How many pages can it read?

Up to 50 pages per file in this version. Larger files: split them, or drop the pages you need.

Why does my PDF come back as “no text layer”?

It is a scan: an image of a page with no text underneath. Recognising scans page by page is not in this version; a screenshot of the page pasted into the popup works.
