Image to Text OCR extracts the text from an image file, a screenshot or a picture on a web page. Drop the image on this page, or install the Chrome extension and right-click any picture. The recognition runs on your device: the image is never uploaded.

Steps
Give it the image
Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF on this page, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V, or pick a file. With the extension installed, right-click an image on any web page and choose Copy text.
Wait a second
The engine loads into your browser once and reads the image there. The first run takes a few seconds, later ones about a second.
Check what was read
The text appears line by line, in reading order. If part of the picture could not be read, the result says so instead of filling the gap with random letters.
Copy and paste
Press Copy text and paste it where you need it. If the image holds a table, Copy as table keeps the rows and columns.
Good to know
- Works best on screenshots, scanned pages, slides, invoices and statements: printed text that is straight and sharp.
- Small text is enlarged automatically before reading, so a low-resolution screenshot still works. A crop that leaves out icons and photos gives a cleaner result.
- Light text on a dark background, like a dark-mode screenshot or a coloured table header, is read as well.
- Handwriting and photos taken at a steep angle are hit and miss. When nothing can be read with confidence, you get “No readable text found” rather than garbage.
Questions
Which image formats can it read?
Anything your browser can open: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF. PDFs are read too: pages with a text layer directly, with tables intact.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The OCR engine is downloaded into the page and runs in your browser. The image, the text and the result stay on your device.
Why is some of the text missing?
The engine keeps only what it read with confidence. Blurry areas, decorative fonts and text over busy photos are skipped, and the result is marked so you know to check it.
Is there a limit?
The tool on this page reads up to three files a day. The Chrome extension has no limit and no account.
Also for Microsoft Edge
No account, no upload, no page limits in the extension. Six permissions and no access to websites.
