Steps
Install the extension
Add Image to Text OCR to Chrome. A page with a sample image opens so you can try it once.
Right-click the image
On any web page, right-click a picture that contains text and choose Copy text.
Wait a second
A badge on the icon shows the engine is reading. The first run loads the recognition engine and takes a few seconds; later runs take about a second.
Paste
A note in the corner says how many characters were copied. Paste with Ctrl+V or ⌘V into a document, a chat or an email.
Good to know
- Works on screenshots, scans and straight photos of printed text. Photos taken at an angle or in poor light may contain mistakes.
- If the image sits behind a login or on another domain, the extension takes a picture of the visible part of the tab and reads that. Scroll the image fully into view for the best result.
- Text in an image that is not on a web page: click the icon and drop the file in, or paste it with Ctrl+V.
Questions
Does it work with images in Gmail, Slack or Teams?
Yes, on their web versions. Right-click the image in the message. If the image cannot be downloaded directly, the visible part of the tab is captured and read instead.
Which languages does it read?
English and German models are bundled. English also handles numbers and most Latin-script text. Switch in the settings.
Is the image uploaded anywhere?
No. Recognition runs inside the extension on your computer. The only network request is loading the image you clicked, from its own address.
Also for Microsoft Edge
No account, no upload, no page limits in the extension. Six permissions and no access to websites.
